Education has always been a high priority in Cheyenne and Wyoming. Nationally, the educational system ranks in the top one-third for per-pupil annual expenditure and test scores. Prompted by a recent State Supreme Court ruling, spending levels have risen dramatically in a major effort to reform the school finance system. The Wyoming State Legislature has completely revised the school financing method from a “classroom unit” funding formula to a “per-pupil” cost basis. While the additional financing has further enhanced Cheyenne’s fine school system, it is the tremendous dedication of Cheyenne’s teachers that makes it one of the premier districts in the Rocky Mountain region. Cheyenne’s teachers are among the best anywhere, and it shows by the academic, musical, and athletic excellence of its students. Laramie County School District No. 1 encompasses the greater Cheyenne area. It operates 26 elementary schools, 3 junior high schools (7th -9th grades), and 3 high schools (10th - 12th grades). Total enrollment is approximately 14,000 students. Cheyenne also has 7 private, parochial, and religious schools with an approximate enrollment of 700. Cheyenne is home to several institutions of higher learning, including Laramie County Community College. LCCC offers a full range of certificated technical programs and two-year academic associate degrees which are fully integrated into the University of Wyoming (located 45 miles to the west in Laramie) curriculum. More than 4,000 full and part-time students attend LCCC. Other institutions of higher learning with branches in Cheyenne include the University of Wyoming Outreach Program, Preston University, Park University, Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University, and Kennedy-Western University. |
