Community Medical Services
Cheyenne has emerged as a regional medical center, with specialists who
are nationally recognized in their fields and a medical and health care
community committed to providing the best care available.
United Medical Center
United Medical Center in Cheyenne is one of the state's largest
hospitals, providing care for people throughout the region. It offers
the latest in medical technology, thanks to community help with
fund-raising, and it's particularly recognized for its cancer treatment
facility. Operating from two separate facilities, United Medical Center
provides a full range of care, including special programs for children,
heart and cancer patients. Its two facilities - UMC West and UMC East -
each specialize in different areas of care.
Cheyenne also has another hospital - a large Veterans Administration facility on the east side. The Cheyenne VA Medical Center
provides primary and secondary inpatient services in medicine and
surgery as well as outpatient services in medicine, surgery and
psychiatry. Presently, the Medical Center has an operating bed level of
21 hospital beds (12 general medical beds, five intermediate beds and
four general surgical beds). The Medical Center also supports a 50-bed
Nursing Home Care Unit located within the main hospital building.
The Medical Center
provides health services to a veteran population service area
containing approximately 42,000 veterans. Tertiary care, such as
open-heart surgery and neurosurgery is provided by the Denver VA
Medical Center. Long-term psychiatric care is provided by the Sheridan
VA Medical Center. Denver and Sheridan VAMCs provide acute inpatient
psychiatric care. Cheyenne maintains Community Based Outpatient Clinic
in Fort Collins, Colorado and Greeley, Colo. and a VA Contract Clinic
in Sidney, Neb.
An excellent relationship is
maintained with community health care providers, volunteer and service
organizations, and United Medical Center. The Department of Defense sharing agreement developed in 1983 between the 90th Medical Group Clinic at Warren
and this facility has developed into a model of interagency sharing.
The Department of the Air Force and Department of Veterans Affairs
resources shared through this agreement includes inpatient, outpatient,
and special medical services. This sharing agreement has continued to
expand including sharing of various services such as radiology,
cardiopulmonary, laboratory, gynecology, surgical, intensive care
services and multiple other services.
